Culture and History:
Grenada, the southernmost of the Windward islands is a former French and British colony whose culture retains heavy French influence. Grenada is known as “The Spice Isle” for its production of spices like nutmeg and cinnamon and the Spicemas festival is held annually in August as a vibrant celebration of Grenada’s unique cuisine, music and dance culture.
In addition to its fame as a major global producer of spices, the country is known for its cocoa and high-quality chocolate, made from locally grown cocoa beans with every stage of organic chocolate bar production taking place on the island.
Grenada’s mountainous interior remains covered by rainforest and holds many waterfalls with crystal clear plunge pools perfect for a refreshing swim. The Grand Etang National Park and Forest Reserve in the centre of the island includes a stunning lake at 570m of elevation naturally formed in the crater of an extinct volcano. It is a home to a variety of wildlife species including Mona Monkeys, a wide range of birds and even armadillos. The park has numerous hiking trails and tours to allow visitors to explore the rich flora and fauna.
Grenada is home to the world’s first underwater sculpture park, opened in 2006 with sculptures closely inspired by Grenada’s culture which not only acts as a diving attraction, but also as an artificial substrate to encourage new reef growth and development ensuring the protection of the local marine ecosystem.
The southern Grenadines are a dependency of Grenada, with the island of Carriacou being the most populous. Carriacou is known for its pristine reef diving spots, including the famous Paradise Beach and its sailing, as well as cultural festivals such as the Maroon festival which celebrates freedom from slavery and the African heritage of the community. Petite Martinique is only home to 900 residents, who mostly partake in boat building and fishing. Both islands host famous Regattas that also serve to showcase local culture and crafts. St George itself (Grenada’s capital) is also a popular boating destination and boasts a beautiful harbour overlooked by pastel coloured houses.
Grenada citizenship offers investors the chance to be part of the small but rich community of this idyllic island.
